Tanderrum Way
In May 2010 the extension of Tanderrum Way (formerly known as Main Street) was opened to pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles after construction completed in March that year. The extension traverses Pearcedale Parade and connects to Dimboola Road, creating a high quality, pedestrian-oriented space that facilitates an active shared space that the community can be proud of.
The progressive design of the extension has delivered a non traditional street typology that conceives the street as a public space rather than a vehicular thoroughfare. This space has the flexibility to accommodate varied uses and is a showpiece for sustainable stormwater management in an urban environment, with Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) at the core of the design of the space.
The distinctive design provides a foundation for community ownership and civic pride, which was demonstrated at the opening community festival and street naming ceremony on May 20 2010. The event attracted a crowd of over 300 community members and on its first use, the street enabled the ultimate shared experience.
Tanderrum Way extension sets the standard of quality, approach and commitment demonstrated by Council for the development of public spaces within the town centre, and will stimulate the design for the redevelopment of Tanderrum Way between Pascoe Vale Road and Pearcedale Parade.
The next stage of development is the completion of the link between Tanderrum Way and the Broadmeadows Town Park and the development of a new entry for the Broadmeadows Leisure Centre on the south of Tanderrum Way. Planning for the redevelopment of Tanderrum Way between Pearcedale Parade and Pascoe Vale Road has also commenced with works scheduled to commence within the next two years.
Visions for Broadmeadows Come to Fruition
The Tanderrum Way extension is completed. The street will initially be open to pedestrians with limited vehicle access until the Hume Central Senior Campus is completed.
To date, all the underground services (including sewer, water and stormwater facilities) are installed, the excavation is now complete, road and pedestrian paving is finished, urban sensitive water design is done, and the street lighting is installed. In addition, the landscaping has commenced, the street furniture will be installed shortly, and the exit and entry points to the street will be amongst the final touches on this exciting project.
Tanderrum Way will create a lively and vibrant streetscape catering for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles. The extension will provide an attractive and functional area for residents. While the new secondary school will enhance educational opportunities here in Hume. These facilities combined represent an investment of $19 million in the future of the Broadmeadows Central Activities District.
Main Street in Broadmeadows has been Renamed Tanderrum Way
The renaming was a result of a community naming competition that was held earlier this year. The name is derived from the Wurundjeri language, representing a dance performed by the Wurundjeri people from Broadmeadows to allow other clan groups a safe passage and use of the land.
The 'Name Main Street' competition was open for your name suggestions between 1 March and 9 April 2010. A selection panel which included Mayor Porter recommended a final name to the Geographic Place Names Registrar, from a total of 250 entries of creative and locally specific names received by Hume residents.
The winner of the 'Name Main Street' competition was Karen King-Caine who says 'it's definitely a story for the grandkids'. Karen has a long association with Broadmeadows, and in fact her great, great, great grandfather was a well regarded figure back in the day.
Karen has spent most of her life in or around Broadmeadows, she is honoured that her street name will mark the heart of Broadmeadows. She received a $1000 voucher to spend at any participating retailer at the Broadmeadows Shopping Centre.
We would like to thank everyone who participated in the competition for their creative input, and for helping shape the future of Broadmeadows.
