Automotive
Ford Motor Company of Australia Limited has long been a beacon on the Hume Highway, and a strength of Victoria's manufacturing engine room. Its presence has spawned the development of a strong and growing local automotive industry cluster. Major suppliers to the motor vehicle industry, Futuris Automotive, Autoliv, Venture Australia, Dana Australia and Delphi, are all located in Hume City.
Transport and Storage
Transport and storage is our second largest industry sector. It employs almost 22 percent of Hume City's labour force. The sector is showing considerable growth within Hume City with nearly 5,000 additional jobs created in between the 2006 and 2011 census years.
Aviation
Melbourne Airport is Hume's biggest employer and a major contributor to the our strong and growing economy. It is renowned worldwide for safety, design and passenger flow. Kangan Institute's Aviation Industry Training Centre is a major provider of training to this sector.
Construction
Hume has traditionally had a strong construction base and with the continued housing development growth, particularly in the Craigieburn area, this is expected to remain strong. Over 8,000 people are employed in the construction industry.
Retail
Over 8,000 people are employed in the retail sector in Hume. The Broadmeadows Shopping Centre features more than 200 specialty shops as well as a 450 seat food court. There are other major shopping complexes located in key residential areas throughout Hume City and a number of quality traditional shopping strips. Construction of Craigieburn Central commenced in December 2011 and upon completion will feature over 150 specialty retailers, catering to the needs of the quickly growing community. Melbourne Airport also has a significant retail precinct.
Education
Hume City has one of the nation's leading TAFE colleges, an aerospace training facility and more than 50 government and independent schools. Kangan Institue is a multi-discipline institute which provides vocational courses in a broad range of occupations. It is a major training provider for the automotive, aerospace and polymer industries and is Victoria's largest provider of trainee and apprenticeship training.
Conference and Meeting Venues
One of Hume City's fastest growing sectors, the municipality has benefited from the development of significant venues for functions and conferences along with international hotels, such as the Park Royal Melbourne Airport. Hume City is also home to an award winning wine industry and the accredited Sunbury Wine Region. The region has many areas of historical significance and tourist interest.
