| Spring snakes prompts warning | | There are numerous reports of snakes in Hume during spring. Snakes are wild animals and are protected under The Wildlife Act 1975. Although they usually avoid people, snakes pose a risk to humans and animals because they are poisonous.
Seven snake species are found throughout Hume and are an important part of many ecosystems. Unfortunately, snake numbers are declining. There are many reasons for this, including the removal of snake habitat through land clearance; more frequent bushfires; the removal of bush rock (an important source of shelter for snakes); introduced animals such as foxes, dogs and cats hunting snakes; road kills; and indiscriminate killing. Many harmless snakes, and even the threatened Striped Legless Lizards, are killed unnecessarily.
Snakes are not naturally aggressive and will retreat where possible. They don’t see humans as prey and will only attack if hurt or provoked. Most cases of snake bite occur when people try to catch or kill snakes. If you come across a snake, just calmly walk away.

| Can I organise for somebody to catch a snake? | | Council does not provide a snake catching service for snakes found on private property. We will, however, contact a snake catcher if the snake is on Council land and the caller knows where the snake is. Contact Customer Service on 9205 2200.
If you find a snake is living around your home a licensed snake catcher can be called to remove it. Snake catchers charge around $100 to relocate a snake to an uninhabited area at least two kilometres away.
