Australia Day Awards

On Australia Day Hume residents come together to welcome new citizens to our city. We also recognise the many people in our community who take time out of their busy lives to help and inspire others.

Hume City Council has a proud tradition of publicly recognising outstanding contributions made to the Hume community through the presentation of the Australia Day Awards. 

Awards are presented in the following categories:

  • Hume Citizen of the Year
  • Hume Young Citizen of the Year
  • Hume Community Event of the Year

 The 2019 Australia Day Award presentations recognised people who made a significant contribution to the community and on behalf of the entire community, Hume City Council would like to congratulate:

Hume Citizen of the Year - Val Price

The 2019 Hume Citizen of the Year, Val Price has been a Craigieburn resident since 1974. In that time Val has been an active part of the Craigieburn Primary School, the Craigieburn Netball Association, Craigieburn Little Athletics and Hume’s Relay for Life, just to name a few. A dedicated community member all round, Val has also participated in re-vegetation activities along Aitken Creek, has been involved in 121 Park Runs, and is a regular blood donor, all while selflessly supporting her own family.

Hume Young Citizen of the Year - Stephanie Challis

Stephanie Challis, Hume's 2019 Young Citizen of the Year, is a remarkable young woman who has been recognised for her involvement with Distinctive Options since 2012. A strong advocate for people with mobility difficulties, Stephanie is a voice and champion for access and inclusion and is recognised and highly respected within the local community for her efforts, determination and friendly face.

Hume Community Event of the Year - Sunbury Agricultural Show

Celebrating its 98th year, the Sunbury Agricultural Show has been awarded the 2019 Hume Community Event of Year award. In 2018, approximately 13,000 visitors attended this long-running and much-loved community event, which attracted more than 1300 entries to the arts and crafts section and more than 2000 entries to pavilion events.
