Siren time: Highgate Recreation Reserve.

Some of Australia’s top footy stars are set to take to the field at Craigieburn, as part of the AFL NAB Challenge pre-season series.

Melbourne will meet the Western Bulldogs at Highgate Recreation Reserve, on Sunday 6 March 2016, at 2.05pm.

Hume Mayor, Councillor Helen Patsikatheodorou, encouraged everyone to come and enjoy the occasion.

“This will be only the second time that two AFL clubs have played against each other in Hume, and we’re thrilled that the Demons and the Bulldogs will do battle at Highgate,” Cr Patsikatheodorou said.

“The match shall offer a unique chance to watch some of Australia’s finest AFL talent up-close, with both teams expected to have an exciting year in 2016.

“While it’s been a terrific summer, I’m sure there are many people who are thirsty for a March footy fix.

“This game affords all football fans an opportunity to see the pre-season form of many different players, and Council anticipates that Demons and Bulldogs supporters will descend on Craigieburn in healthy numbers.”

The match will be televised live by Fox Sports, and shall be followed by an AFL Women’s exhibition game, to feature 50 of the best female Aussie Rules players from across Victoria.

The women’s match is scheduled to commence at 5pm.

Cr Patsikatheodorou said the Highgate Recreation Reserve was the perfect place for a day of football.

“Hume City Council developed this reserve so that it could, in part, host top football matches,” she said.

“The reserve features two ovals, a large main pavilion which accommodates a function room, a smaller club pavilion, and some picturesque walking paths.”

Highgate Recreation Reserve is home to the Calder Cannons, which fields teams in the TAC Cup.

The Cannons have nurtured some of Australia’s finest AFL players, including stars like Dane Swan, Luke Mitchell, Ryan O’Keefe, Brock McLean, Joe Daniher, Paul Chapman, Jude Bolton, and Eddie Betts.

Cr Patsikatheodorou said Sunday 6 March 2016 would be a great day for sport in Hume.

“Some really fantastic male and female footballers will be in Craigieburn, and every player will be eager to impress,” she said.

“Mark the football matches down in your March calendar, and enjoy a wonderful time in Hume.”

Highgate Recreation Reserve is located at 229-275 Grand Boulevard in Craigieburn.
