Oh sugar: Actor and author Damon Gameau to explore his relationship with food.

A man who developed multiple problems after he consumed large amounts of sugar for 60 days as part of a so-called health program will visit Hume this June for two special talks.

Damon Gameau documented his experiment with a low-fat, high-sugar diet in the movie That Sugar Film, and also published a book, titled That Sugar Book.

Hume Mayor, Councillor Helen Patsikatheodorou, said Damon would appear at the branches of Hume Libraries in Sunbury and Broadmeadows.

“This will be a fascinating session, as Damon reveals the incredible journey he took with sugar,” Cr Patsikatheodorou said.

“Damon had a very healthy body, but put on lots of weight when he started to deliberately eat foods which contained sugar.

“He will explain at the talks about the way sugar can damage the mind and body when people consume the soluble carbohydrate to excess.

“Damon shall also speak on what experts say about sugar, and how healthy eating programs have started to make a difference across Australia.

“His film and book highlighted the many everyday foods and drinks which contain sugar, from cereals, cakes and ice-creams, to apples, oranges and juices.”

Damon Gameau will appear at:

• Sunbury Library, 44 Macedon Street, Sunbury, on Thursday 2 June 2016 from 6.30pm until 8.00pm; and
• The Age Library, 1093 Pascoe Vale Road, Broadmeadows, on Saturday 25 June 2016 between 2.00pm and 3.30pm.

Cr Patsikatheodorou said both sessions would be free to attend.

“While Damon will offer his perspective on Australia’s food and sugar industry, he shall also answer any questions that people might have,” she said.

“His movie sparked many different reactions, and That Sugar Book reached number one on Australia’s health and wellbeing best-seller list.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Damon at a time when obesity has become a major problem across Australia with people of all ages.”

As an actor, Damon Gameau has appeared in Love My Way, The Tracker, and the US sitcom How I Met Your Mother.

He is in a relationship with Winners and Losers star Zoe Tuckwell-Smith, who features in That Sugar Film.

The talks at the branches of Hume Libraries are suited to people aged 18 and over.

Anyone who would like to attend should book in advance via 03 9356 6900 or through this webpage.

Cr Patsikatheodorou said Hume Libraries regularly invited authors to speak at public events.

“It’s a great way to bring a publication to life, and understand the story behind a book,” she said.
