Council welcomes decision on Sunbury

Hume City Council today welcomed the Victorian Government’s decision to abandon the proposed separation of Sunbury from Hume and the creation of a new Sunbury City Council.

Hume Mayor, Councillor Adem Atmaca, said the announcement by the Minister for Local Government, Natalie Hutchins, ended more than three years of uncertainty and speculation, and would allow the Council and community to plan for the future with greater clarity.

“Council was determined to achieve a fair outcome for Hume residents, regardless of which town or suburb they called home,” Cr Atmaca said.

“While Hume City Council was greatly concerned about the separation process undertaken by the previous Victorian Government, we have always respected the views of our community.

“Council is grateful to every resident who took the time to express their opinion on this matter, including those that attended public consultation sessions.

“We appreciate the work undertaken by the Transition Auditors, Local Government Victoria, and the Minister for Local Government.

“The Transition Auditors and the Minister acknowledged that the Sunbury split, as it was proposed, would have left many residents in Hume with an unnecessary financial burden.

“The Transition Auditors, like Council, were concerned about the timeframes imposed, the method of asset distribution, and the costs that would be borne by the community.”

Hume Chief Executive, Domenic Isola, said the organisation would continue to maintain its focus and deliver important services and community projects to all areas of Hume.

“I would like to thank our staff members who have continued to work diligently for the entire community throughout three years of uncertainty and speculation,” Mr Isola said.

“Throughout this process, Council has continued to provide services for people of all ages and we have maintained the planning and delivery of important projects.

“We will continue to plan and deliver projects that our community expects, and now we can do this with greater certainty.”
