Hey Hey It’s Second Hand Saturday!

Second Hand Saturday was set to offer residents of Hume with a simple way to dispose of unwanted goods, Hume Mayor, Councillor Adem Atmaca, announced today.

Cr Atmaca said Craigieburn would host the recycling event for the very first time on Saturday 24 October 2015 between 9am and 4pm, at Bunnings Warehouse, 700 Hume Highway.

“Second Hand Saturday will be one of the most useful days of the year for people who want to clear out the clutter and give their home a spring clean,” Cr Atmaca said.

“Residents of Hume are invited to bring along mattresses, whitegoods and old electronic items, like computers and televisions, so that Council can recycle them.

“People may dispose of up to 15 items for free, and it’s a practical means to remove preloved goods from your home in time for summer.

“Now is the time to consider what you would like to get rid of, so spend a few hours preparing for Second Hand Saturday to make sure you’re ready to join us at Bunnings.”

Everyone who disposes of goods at Second Hand Saturday will be asked to provide evidence that they live in Hume.

Cr Atmaca said that he hoped the day would help Hume City Council to curb the illegal dumping of rubbish.

“We take a zero tolerance approach to anyone who tips rubbish into our community, and Hume officers investigate every incident and prosecute offenders.

“Council has used CCTV cameras at a variety of sites, so that we can pursue those who have disregard for the law, and the amenity of Hume.

“While it costs ratepayers money every time we remove discarded rubbish, the offenders also end up with a massive bill.”

People who are found guilty in court of rubbish dumping face fines of up to $6000.

Although Second Hand Saturday focuses on particular items that can be recycled, Council also offers Hume residents a free hard waste service.

Each year, every household receives one free collection of up to three cubic metres of hard waste.

Households may also select from one of the following extra options:

• another home collection of three cubic metres of hard rubbish;
• two passes to a Hume City Council waste facility, to dispose of hard waste in a car or single-axle trailer; or
• one visit to a Hume City Council waste facility with rubbish in a double-axle trailer.
