Homework club honoured

A unique club that helps primary and secondary school students with their homework has been honoured by a state award.

Craigieburn Library Homework Club has received the runner-up prize at the MY Education Awards, in the category of ‘outstanding metropolitan out-of-school-hours learning support program’.

The Minister for Education, James Merlino, presented the award at a ceremony on Tuesday 8 September 2015.

The Craigieburn Library Homework Club is coordinated by Hume City Council in partnership with Banksia Gardens Community Services, and operates on Thursdays between 3.45pm and 5.30pm, during school terms.

Hume Mayor, Councillor Adem Atmaca, said the award recognised an innovative service which helped many families.

“The Craigieburn Library Homework Club has been a tremendous success, and everyone at the club is thrilled with this award,” Cr Atmaca said.

“The club assists students with their homework across all school subjects, and it has helped Hume’s young people to improve their academic results.

“The tutors are first-class and are able to communicate complex ideas in a way that children and teenagers can understand.

“We want to support Hume’s students so that they can achieve their full potential, and build what I’m sure will be an exciting future.

“The MY Education award demonstrates the success of the Craigieburn Library Homework Club, and I encourage young people in Hume to consider whether the club could assist them.

“I’m inspired by the success of these students, and the wonderful support that they have received from their tutors.”

Hume City Council is committed to a range of initiatives that help residents to learn right throughout their life.

The MY Education Awards are run by the Centre for Multicultural Youth, and recognise the outstanding work of students, volunteer tutors, schools, and out-of-school-hour learning support programs.
