Library home to people who knit for homeless

More than 150 items, including 11 blankets, have been knitted by two groups which operate at Hume Libraries’ branches in Broadmeadows and Sunbury.

Every Monday afternoon, residents create woollen clothes and other goods at Sunbury Library as part of Hooked on Yarn.

On Wednesdays, between 1pm and 3pm, another group of talented knitters work with wool at The Age Library in Broadmeadows.

Hume Mayor, Councillor Adem Atmaca, said the associations were part of Council’s MakerSpace program, and produced goods for people less fortunate than themselves.

“The residents knit a range of clothes and toys for people who are homeless, and the items are dispersed by various charities, including Kogo,” Cr Atmaca said.

“The members of these two groups have lovingly made beanies, scarves, gloves, and jumpers, and the colours and styles are simply superb.

“Some of the craftspeople have many years of experience, and the programs offer a chance to learn and hone a range of knitting skills.”

The groups have knitted the following items for underprivileged people:

• 94 beanies;
• 47 scarves;
• 11 blankets;
• 8 kids’ jumpers;
• 3 toy bears;
• 1 pair of gloves; and
• 1 baby jacket.

Cr Atmaca said he was thrilled that residents had volunteered their time to assist people in need.

“Hume consists of some very generous and selfless individuals, and I congratulate the knitters who come together each week without any wish for recognition or reward,” he said.

“They understand how the simple gift of a blanket or a scarf can change a person’s life.

“When an individual receives a hand-made beanie or a jumper, they immediately know that someone has thought about them and cared for them.

“There are many people in our community who continue to face real hardship, and I’m so proud of those who step forward to make a tangible difference.

“While the temperature has risen in recent weeks, the nights are still cold and I know that the clothes knitted at Hume Libraries’ branches will be very welcome.”

People aged 18 or over are very welcome to join the Hooked on Yarn or Yarnz groups.
