Making returns less taxing

An army of volunteers stands ready to help Hume’s residents complete their 2014-15 tax returns.

Council will again offer a Tax Help service to residents who earned less than $50,000 in the last financial year.

Hume Mayor, Councillor Adem Atmaca, said it was important that people could correctly fill-in and lodge their tax returns, regardless of ability.

“Tax returns can be complicated for many people and we don’t want any of our residents to miss out on their entitlements simply because they don’t understand how to correctly complete a form,” Cr Atmaca said.

“Many individuals dread tax time and this is often because they find the process hard.

“People in Hume have a strong record of looking after each other, and Council’s Tax Help program will make it possible for residents to give other residents a helping hand.”

The Australian Taxation Office has trained and accredited a total of 14 Hume volunteers.

They will be able to offer help in English, as well as 12 other languages, including Arabic, Assyrian, Bengali, French, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Nepali, Punjabi, Sinhalese, Turkish and Vietnamese.

Tax Help will operate at the Hume Global Learning Centre – Broadmeadows and the Hume Global Learning Centre – Craigieburn, and run from 20 July 2015 to 30 October 2015.

Eligible residents can access the free service via an appointment.

Cr Atmaca said Tax Help has supported residents for many years.

“This will be the seventh year we’ve offered Tax Help, and it continues to be one of Council’s most popular services,” he said.

“Last year, we helped 695 Hume residents to lodge their tax returns, and that was up from 608 locals in 2013.

“Tax Help volunteers offer a comfortable and confidential environment, where they can talk with residents about their income details face-to-face.”

The volunteers are supported by Council’s Hume Volunteer Gateway program, which connects residents with local projects that need assistance.

Eligible residents can book an appointment with a Tax Help volunteer on 03 9356 6928 or via taxhelpadmin@hume.vic.gov.au
