The Mayor of Hume, Councillor Helen Patsikatheodorou, has been appointed to a panel that directly advises Victoria’s Minister for Local Government, Natalie Hutchins.

Cr Patsikatheodorou will be one of 12 mayors to sit on the 2016 Local Government Mayoral Advisory Panel.

The panel discusses issues that affect councils.

Cr Patsikatheodorou said she would use her role on the panel to pursue the interests of local government.

“My appointment offers an opportunity for Hume City Council to communicate directly with the Minister for Local Government, and other councils, on a regular basis,” Cr Patsikatheodorou said.

“I am grateful to have the opportunity to offer my counsel at a time of great change for the local government sector.

“The State Government is in the midst of a review into the Local Government Act 1989.

“It has also recently introduced new laws that govern the behaviour of all councillors.

“And parliament last year passed legislation that now caps the percentage at which council rates can rise.”

The 2016 Local Government Mayoral Advisory Panel will meet on the following days:

• 16 March;
• 1 June;
• 3 August; and
• 19 October.
