News splash!

Hume City Council has today received notification that the Australian Government will commit more than $9 million to the new Craigieburn Regional Aquatic and Leisure Centre.

The Federal Budget announcement was made by the Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss.

Hume Mayor, Councillor Adem Atmaca, said the news provided a great boost to the entire Hume community.

“This is simply wonderful news for everyone in Hume, and particularly the increasing number of families in Craigieburn,” Cr Atmaca said.

“Hume has planned this first-class centre for many years, and the Australian Government’s contribution will help us build a pool and a gym in the heart of Craigieburn Park.

“Construction works will commence in the next six months, and today’s announcement takes us one step closer to delivering this state-of-the-art facility.”

The Craigieburn Regional Aquatic and Leisure Centre will be situated amongst a 12.14 hectare park, which will also include an athletics track, playgrounds, parkland, and car parking.

The site is centrally located to the north of Craigieburn Central Shopping Centre, bounded by Aitken and Marathon boulevards, Central Park Avenue and Windrock Avenue.

Cr Atmaca said the Craigieburn Regional Aquatic and Leisure Centre would support generations of Hume residents.

“We’re building a leisure complex that will support the residents of Hume for at least 40 years,” he said.

“It will offer a pool, gym and other facilities to help people improve their health and fitness, and I’m confident that the centre will assist children and adults of all ages.

“The Craigieburn Regional Aquatic and Leisure Centre will present our community with a wonderful place for people to spend time in a safe environment.”

Hume City Council has advocated strongly in support of funding for the pool and gym, along with the Federal Member for McEwen, Rob Mitchell.

The Australian Government has allocated $9,091,825 to the centre through the National Stronger Regions Fund, and the Victorian Government has also committed $3 million.
