Melbourne Water Key Messages: Somerton fire and Merri Creek runoff
  • As a result of the recent Somerton firefighting efforts there has been significant run off entering Merri Creek.
  • To minimise the run off Melbourne Water put pollution barriers in place on Monday. Although these barriers were successful in capturing some of the run off, due to the large quantity and the ongoing firefighting efforts, the barriers were not successful in stopping all the run off from entering the creek.

  • Melbourne Waster has been able to contain the polluted water to a 7km length of waterway (between Patullos Lane Somerton to Somerset Road Campbellfield)
  • This has resulted in the water appearing dark in colour and residents and community members may notice a change in the water quality (including reduced oxygen levels) and as a result this may affect wildlife living in the creek.
  • A team of experts are working around the clock to rectify the issue and return the creek to the health levels we expect. We are undertaking a number of measures to stop the creek flow and minimise contamination further.
  • Several pumps have been set-up to remove the pollution from the creek and today we are hoping to be able to flush the effected part of the creek, which will see clean water pushed through the area.
  • Water testing has been undertaken and was initiated early so we can get a full understanding of the impacts on the creek.
  • As a precaution we are advising people to avoid contact with the water in Merri Creek until further notice.
  • We apologise for causing any inconvenience, but our absolute priority is protecting the health and wellbeing of the community and wildlife.
  • We are working closely with EPA and DHHS to ensure the best outcome possible.
