Stellar day for Sunbury

25 February 2016

Hume has today purchased land in the heart of Sunbury, on which Council intends to construct a new library and a learning centre for the benefit of generations of local residents.

Council has signed a contract to pay $1.885 million for a 4,083 square metre site which rests next door to the current Sunbury Library, at 46-48 Macedon Street.

Hume CEO, Domenic Isola, said the purchase was an exciting moment for every resident of Sunbury and all members of the Hume community.

“Hume City Council will build a learning centre of excellence at this fantastic location,” Mr Isola said.

“The site on Macedon Street is right in the midst of the Sunbury township, and it’s very accessible and visible.

“That grassy space you see today will be transformed into a wonderful place for the entire community.

“The site will house a state-of-the-art library, as well as rooms and hi-tech facilities to assist the education of Sunbury residents for many years to come.

“Our plans are set to also include function rooms and areas where community groups can meet.

“The Global Learning Centre will offer Sunbury a modern civic building and one in which all of us can be proud.”

The new centre shall be designed to support one of Australia’s fastest growing communities.

Sunbury’s population is expected to rise by 70 per cent between now and 2030, with an extra 14,000 homes to be constructed to the east of the town centre.

Thousands of additional dwellings shall also be built along Lancefield Road and Sunbury Road.

Mr Isola said Hume City Council looked forward to working with Sunbury residents as it planned the Global Learning Centre.

“We want to construct a centre that can meet the needs of a community which includes many senior citizens, and large numbers of young families,” he said.

“Council is keen to consult closely with residents as it develops the centre, and there will be many opportunities for people to have a say.

“This is a stellar day for the people of Sunbury and our entire municipality, and I look forward to that day when we open the door to a brand new Global Learning Centre on Macedon Street.”
