Sunbury street an alfresco stunner!

O’Shanassy Street in Sunbury is set to become one of Victoria’s top alfresco dining strips, thanks to a stunning redevelopment by Hume.

Council has spent $2.1 million to improve the eastern side of O’Shanassy Street to encourage more people to spend time at the area’s shops, bars and restaurants.

Hume Mayor, Councillor Helen Patsikatheodorou, said the upgrade had provided restaurateurs with more room outdoors for tables and chairs.

“We’ve removed a number of brick garden beds from O’Shanassy Street, and visitors will notice that the footpath now appears much wider,” Cr Patsikatheodorou said.

“Hume City Council has built a second pedestrian crossing on O’Shanassy Street, near the IGA, so that shoppers of all abilities can safely walk across the road as they visit Sunbury’s businesses.

“Council has installed new seats and assisted Western Water to mount two new drink fountains, which are sure to entice people to spend more time in the retail precinct.

“We also plan to add movable garden beds to the streetscape, and they will nurture edible plants that are certain to fascinate both children and adults.

“The changes have made a big difference to this important Sunbury street, and I hope people will take some time to inspect Council’s renovations and chat with Hume’s businesses.”

As part of the redevelopment, Hume improved O’Shanassy Street’s kerbs and drains, and upgraded the road’s asphalt surface.

The project also saw Council place all power lines underground, to allow street trees to grow to a large and natural shape.

Cr Patsikatheodorou said the trees would soon be home to thousands of fairy lights that were sure to brighten O’Shanassy Street across the Christmas season, and in the years ahead.

“The fairy lights will be an ongoing feature and will help to showcase the mature elm trees that are a prominent part of the streetscape,” she said.

“They are set to sparkle on the trees’ trunks and branches, and shall demonstrate that O’Shanassy Street is open for business each evening.

“The lights will create a wonderful ambience as residents dine, and will also leave a positive impression in the minds of visitors to Sunbury.”

Hume City Council has upgraded a number of Sunbury’s CBD streets since 2005, and is scheduled to commence works on the western side of O’Shanassy Street in 2016-17.

Cr Patsikatheodorou said Hume wanted to help O’Shanassy Street’s traders to develop alfresco dining even further.

“Summer is a wonderful time to share a meal with family and friends, and there are some terrific options along O’Shanassy Street,” she said.

“Council recently endorsed a new set of guidelines to assist traders who wish to set up chairs and tables as permanent structures along O’Shanassy Street.

“Hume’s recent works will help the Sunbury street be one of the truly great restaurant strips.”
