Hume Business Awards open for nomination

Businesses based in Hume were indispensable drivers of prosperity, Hume Mayor, Councillor Helen Patsikatheodorou, has said.

Cr Patsikatheodorou made the comment as she called on local residents to nominate private enterprises for a 2016 Hume Business Award.

“Many different industries operate in Hume, from transport and manufacturing, to retail and tourism,” Cr Patsikatheodorou said.

“Businesses employ people in all corners of our municipality, and provide a chance for families to build great futures.

“The Hume Business Awards reward local businesses which exhibit a fantastic product or a tremendous service, as well as those that deliver exemplary customer service.

“The people behind Hume’s businesses often take risks to innovate and put a product on the market, and their passionate efforts drive our local economy.

“The Hume awards provide some of our finest businesses with a platform to tell others about their product or service.

“The honours help to boost morale amongst staff members and can assist local businesses to attract dedicated employees who want to work at a high-achieving firm.”

The 2016 Hume Business Awards recognise businesses for their superior efforts in areas like manufacturing, sustainability, retail, customer service, professional services, innovation and new and emerging business.

Cr Patsikatheodorou said last year’s Hume Business of the Year had excelled in many different areas.

“Breathometer Corporation took out the top prize in 2015 and it’s helped to reduce drink-driving right across Australia,” she said.

“The Tullamarine firm produces hi-tech devices that allow people to determine their blood alcohol level before they consider whether to drive a car.

“Breathometer continually upgrades its technology and the company’s machines have helped to reduce the number of drunken arrests at events like the Southern 80 ski race in Echuca.

“It has operated in the north-west of Melbourne for more than 30 years, and provided jobs to many people.”

The Hume Business Awards build on a number of initiatives by Hume City Council to help develop local industries.

Each year, Council presents vibrant business breakfasts that enable employers to network and share their experiences.

Hume also coordinates training and development workshops, and helps companies to recruit workers who live in the local community.

People can nominate a business for a 2016 Hume Business Award, until 21 September here
