O'Shanassy Street, Sunbury shines at Awards

The activation of O’Shanassy Street, Sunbury was celebrated at the National Mainstreet Australia Awards on Wednesday 20 July, taking out top honour in the category: Projects and Partnerships Award (Annual Funding under $100,000).

Hume Mayor, Councillor Helen Patsikatheodorou, said the lively activation of the street had come as the result of a wonderful collaboration between Hume City Council, Sunbury Business Association, Sunbury Community Health, traders and the community.

“I am thrilled that the improvements in O’Shanassy Street have been recognised by this award,” Cr Patsikatheodorou said.

“Following the upgrade of the street, members of the business community worked with Council to deliver a number of new initiatives to attract people to O’Shanassy Street.

“The street is looking bright and welcoming, with sparkling fairy lighting in the trees. Vegetables and herbs are growing in wicker planters, cared for by local businesses and community members.

“Businesses have installed more outdoor furniture, so that customers can enjoy alfresco dining. The trial of an outdoor smoking ban allows diners to enjoy the ambience in smoke-free comfort.

“Sunbury StreetLife Festival was launched in 2015 and was a great hit. Over 120 stalls showcased the products and services of local businesses. Festival goers were also treated to amazing live performances and kids activities.

“The 2016 Sunbury StreetLife Festival in November is expected to be even bigger and better!

“All of these initiatives have made this food and dining precinct a major drawcard for locals and visitors to the region. O’Shanassy Street is a place where people want to be.”

Mainstreet Australia Awards are held biennially, as a celebration and recognition of the hard work, commitment and initiative of the individuals and organisations that contribute to the success of our main streets. Finalists from around Australia contended for the awards.

“We had a shared vision for O’Shanassy Street and have worked together to strengthen the street’s growing reputation as a premier dining and retail precinct.

“This award is recognition of all of the hard work that has been done and of the success that can be achieved when we all work together.”
