Tax Time Help

Tax Help is now available for Hume residents who would like assistance to complete and lodge their 2015-16 tax returns.

Hume City Council, in partnership with the Australian Tax Office, is once again offering this free help to residents who are low income earners. Hume residents who earned less than $50,000 last financial year are encouraged to use this confidential service.

Hume Mayor, Councillor Helen Patsikatheodorou, said Council was proud to be able to work with volunteers to provide Tax Help.

“Many people find tax returns complicated and confusing, the process can be quite daunting for some,” Cr Patsikatheodorou said.

“We don’t want any of our residents to miss out on their entitlements, simply because they are unsure about how to correctly complete the form.”

Council’s Tax Help program brings together residents and volunteers who are trained and accredited by the Australian Taxation Office. This year, 12 Hume residents are volunteering their time and knowledge to help other locals.

Help will be available in English and a variety of other community languages, depending on volunteer availability.

Tax Help appointments will be held at:

  • Hume City Council Head Office – Broadmeadows
  • Hume Global Learning Centre – Craigieburn

This year Council is trialling evening appointments on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 5:00-7:00pm, at the Hume Global Learning Centre – Broadmeadows.

Eligible residents can book an appointment with a Tax Help volunteer on 03 9356 6928, or email taxhelp@hume.vic.gov.au. The free service will be available until 30 October 2016.

Tax Help is also offered at Goonawarra Neighbourhood House and Tullamarine Community House.

Cr Patsikatheodorou said Hume residents had been assisted by Tax Help for many years.

“This is the eighth year that we have offered Tax Help, and it is always a very popular service,” she said.

“Last year, we helped 634 Hume residents to lodge their tax returns. Since 2012, we have helped Hume residents to complete and lodge close to 2,500 tax returns.”

The volunteers are supported by Council’s Hume Volunteer Gateway program, which connects residents with local volunteering opportunities.
