Dumpers caught out by Hume CCTV

Hume City Council has successfully prosecuted two individuals and a company for illegal dumping in Craigieburn, with the Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court fining them for the separate incidents.

Hume Mayor, Councillor Drew Jessop, said Council officers had used CCTV footage from  remote surveillance on the vacant site to prosecute the offenders. The offenders were fined a total of $3100 on Wednesday 5 April.

“This case should send a very clear message to anyone who thinks they can simply find an empty block to dump rubbish on and expect the community to deal with it,” Cr Jessop said.

“These actions are disrespectful towards our community as ultimately, illegal dumping costs ratepayers money and damages the appearance of our City.

Hume City Council successfully prosecuted the following incidents of illegally dumped rubbish:

  • An individual pleaded guilty to dumping two black bags of rubbish on the site and was fined $500.
  • An individual pleaded guilty to dumping green waste and general waste on the site and was fined $600.
  • A company pleaded guilty to dumping rocks on the site. The company was fined $2000.

Cr Jessop said the cases revealed just how determined Hume City Council was in pursuing offenders, regardless of how small or large the dumped rubbish was.

“We take all matters of illegal dumping seriously and we attempt to prosecute each offender, regardless of the size of the waste,” Cr Jessop said.

“We have the ways and means to investigate dumped rubbish in Hume, and Council will use these methods to bring offenders to justice.

“This includes a network of surveillance cameras at hot spots around Hume where people have dumped rubbish.”

Cr Jessop said there was no excuse for illegally dumping rubbish in Hume, as Council made it easy to dispose of unwanted goods.

“Illegally dumped rubbish in Hume, whether it’s a food wrapper or a bag of waste, is damaging to our City’s landscape, environment and visual appearance.

“As well as collecting household waste and recyclable material from the kerbside, Council also offers a limited free hard rubbish collection service to all residents, along with other free recycling services.
