New sports complex brings new opportunities to Melbourne’s north

A Craigieburn multi-purpose sports complex which brings hockey, lacrosse and community facilities to Melbourne’s north was officially opened by Hume City Council and the Victorian Government today.

Hume Mayor, Councillor Geoff Porter, joined Minister for Sport John Eren to officially open the $1.8 million Hume Hockey and Lacrosse Pavilion, saying the occasion marked an exciting milestone for the Craigieburn community, Hume City and the wider northern region.

“Prior to construction of this centre, there were no Hockey Victoria affiliated venues between the Calder Freeway and Hume Highway in Melbourne’s north-west, and no Lacrosse Victoria affiliated venues between Altona and Eltham in Melbourne’s north-west,” Cr Porter said.

“Supporting Council and the community’s vision, Hockey Victoria and Lacrosse Victoria identified the growth area of Melbourne’s north as the ideal location to have a presence.

“This new complex in Craigieburn was developed to a regional competition standard, and will encourage greater participation in sport and recreation within our City.

“We look forward to celebrating the achievements of local hockey club, the Hume Highlanders, and the future lacrosse club, and sincerely thank the Victorian Government for their generous contribution of $600,000 towards the construction of this complex.”

The key features of the Hume Hockey and Lacrosse Pavilion include:

  • Change rooms for players and officials;
  • Player and spectator amenities;
  • A social room;
  • Canteen;
  • Kitchen facilities; and
  • Function rooms and meeting spaces.

Councillor Porter said the Hockey and Lacrosse Pavilion was an important feature in Craigieburn’s $4.8 million Newbury Park.

“Craigieburn is growing steadily and is expected to reach 66,000 residents by 2041,” Cr Porter said.

“Council is taking action now to ensure that local facilities and services can meet the needs of the Craigieburn community.

“When Newbury Park is complete, it will feature a playspace, open grassed area, half basketball court, skate facility and the Hume Hockey and Lacrosse Pavilion.

“We are already seeing how Newbury Park can promote healthy living for the growing Craigieburn community through the completion of the Hume Hockey and Lacrosse Pavilion, and look forward to seeing increased opportunities for all types of leisure activities once it’s fully complete.”
