Nominations open for awards that honour local hero

Nominations have opened for the 2017 Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG Memorial Awards, which award up to $5000 for young locals who demonstrate the values of the fallen Australian hero, to pursue their dreams.

Hume Mayor Councillor Drew Jessop said Corporal Baird VC MG, an Australian soldier and a Gladstone Park local, was admired for his selflessness, acts of courage and for his ultimate sacrifice on the battlefield which saw him bravely try to draw enemy fire away from his comrades, in Afghanistan.

“Along with his military skills, Corporal Baird VC MG is remembered for his involvement in the local community and his desire to inspire the next generation,” Cr Jessop said.

“To honour his legacy and encourage young people to follow their dreams, Hume City Council established the Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG Memorial Awards, which biennially, allocates up to $5000, across two categories, to help fulfil his vision.”

The two categories which Hume residents between the ages of 12-25 can apply for are:

Leading from the front Achievement Award – Where your achievements in sports, community, art, employment or education will be recognised.

Gaining ground Encouragement Award – Where your commitment to an area of interest will be recognised.

What will be funded?

  •  Education costs
  • Travel to attend a conference (and conference fees)
  • Support for personal or professional development
  • Equipment (e.g. sports equipment, a computer or software)

Cr Jessop said the Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG Memorial Awards were established by Hume City Council in 2015 to recognise the legacy of Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG, a Hume local and national hero who passed away in 2013.

“The awards are intended to encourage young people to be like Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG and to strive to be the best they can be,” Cr Jessop said.

“We’re looking for young active members of the Hume community who share a passion to help other young people to be their best. “We are exceptionally proud to be able to recognise shining examples of our young citizens while also honouring his bravery and commitment.”
