Heart of Victorian Rugby League finds home in Broadmeadows

Hume City Council has welcomed news of a recently announced Rugby League Centre of Excellence in Broadmeadows.

Hume Mayor Geoff Porter said the future centre would be a State hub for the sport and included playing fields, high-performance facilities and an administrative-base for NRL Victoria.

“Council is pleased to partner with the State Government, the NRL, NRL Victoria and Melbourne Storm to bring this Rugby League Centre of Excellence to fruition,” Cr Porter said.

“Council is proud to provide the land which has enabled this development to occur and to work in partnership to deliver this world class sporting facilities.

“We know that Broadmeadows continues to develop as a thriving and easily accessed community hub of business and recreation, and this future facility will only add to this.

“We also know that there are many in our community, particularly young residents, who are passionate about the sport.

“Having this centre based locally will have a very positive impact on their professional development and open doors that they may have not had access to before.

“Our community deserves access to the best sporting facilities and this future centre will provide residents with access to an elite facility like no other!”

Councillor Porter said that Council strongly welcomed news that Hume could also be home to a future Melbourne Storm women’s team.

“We know that female participation in sport is determined by how accessible facilities are,” Cr Porter said.

“This future centre in Broadmeadows will undoubtedly foster local female participation in Rugby League.

“Not only will it support local female talent, it will also create a pathway for a Melbourne Storm women’s team to take part in the new NRL Women’s Premiership.

“I can’t wait to join other Hume locals in waving the Storm flag and showing our support for this new team.

“It’s fair to say that we are proud as punch to host an NRL Women’s Premiership team and to become the Victorian heart of Rugby League!

“Council thanks the State Government for their investment in this facility and looks forward to working with them, the NRL, NRL Victoria and Melbourne Storm to bring this fantastic initiative to life.”
