Hume Mayor donation helping to prevent homelessness

Donating his Ford Mondeo, Hume Mayor, Councillor Geoff Porter said it is heart-warming to know that my car will help make a difference in the lives of young people needing a helping hand.

“The early and practical assistance Kids Under Cover provides is the key to helping young people stay on a positive path,” Cr Porter said.

“The program is two-fold, offering a secure, safe place for young people to stay, plus educational opportunities that help them pursue their chosen passion.

“Disposing of old vehicles can be a hassle but it is important to remember it is illegal to leave unregistered vehicles out on the street.

“When an unregistered vehicle is reported to Council, officers promote the donation of the vehicle to Kids Under Cover as one way to easily remove unwanted vehicles with the added benefit of helping a very worthy cause.”

Kids Under Cover CEO, Jo Swift, expressed her gratitude to Hume Mayor, Councillor Geoff Porter for his support.

“Kids Under Cover is focused on preventing youth homelessness through practical measures and early intervention. Donations like this assist us in providing physical support – including building relocatable studios for young people to live in while remaining connected to family and support networks, providing the valuable space they need,” Ms Swift said.

Donations of vehicles is essential for Kids Under Cover, as 100 per cent of the proceeds from the sale of the vehicles are directed back to the charity.

“Helping to prevent youth homelessness can be simple,” said Jo Swift. “All it takes is filling in an online form and Kids Under Cover will collect your unwanted car for free. All sale proceeds from the donation help at-risk young people stay connected to home and education.

“We know it works. From an economic point of view, independent evaluations show that for every dollar invested in a Kids Under Cover studio, on average $4.17 is saved by society in the form of reduced health and justice costs, and flow-on economic benefits. And, most importantly, a young person is no longer at risk of becoming homeless, and is now living in secure and stable accommodation.”

To date, Kids Under Cover has helped to support over 3,000 young people at risk of homelessness.

About Kids Under Cover
Established in 1989, Kids Under Cover is a not‑for‑profit organisation dedicated to preventing youth homelessness. Kids Under Cover is focused on early intervention to tackle youth homelessness through practical measures. The organisation helps keep families together by providing relocatable studios for young people in a carer’s or family’s backyard. These studios give at-risk young people a chance to stay close to their families or carers, and provide them the valuable space they need. The provision of secure accommodation is complemented with further education and training scholarships to financially assist young people who have the passion and the motivation to go on to higher education but do not have the resources. This unique combination of accommodation and educational support helps keep families together.
