Hume makes history, again!

Following from electing Hume’s first three-time Mayor last year, Hume City Councillors have made history again by electing a previous Mayor’s sister to lead the city.

Aitken Ward Councillor Carly Moore has followed in the footsteps of her sister, former Councillor Casey Nunn, and was elected Mayor for 2018/19 at last night’s Statutory Meeting.

The lifetime Hume resident paid tribute to her family; and her sister’s encouragement to convince her to run for Council.

“I thank my fellow Councillors for affording me this opportunity - your energy, passion and commitment to delivering positive outcomes for our community is outstanding,” Cr Moore said.

“We each bring a mixture of experiences, areas of passion and expertise and we have a great diversity of ideas.

“But, to be an effective Council, we must be a highly-functioning team and I am proud to say, that this Council is one hundred per cent focused on delivering for the community that we all love.”

Cr Moore will be joined by Meadow Valley Ward Councillor Naim Kurt, who was elected Deputy Mayor at last night’s meeting.

In her maiden speech Cr Moore also spoke of her commitment to creating a positive future for the families of Hume that will underpin her term as Mayor.

Her focus areas will include:

  • delivering the highest level of infrastructure to meet the needs of our growing community. Infrastructure matters as the groups that call these places home are often the heart and soul of our community.
  • working with Councillors and Council Officers to seek innovative and creative ways to improve the appearance of our City; with dumped rubbish and shopping trolleys on the top of the list.
  • ensuring that through strong governance, innovative financial management and considered decision making, Council will continue to achieve positive outcomes and maintain a sustainable financial position.

Cr Moore also anticipated the openings of the Hume Global Learning Centre – Sunbury and the Broadmeadows Town Hall would be significant highlights of her term of office.

Cr Moore also took the opportunity to thank former Mayor Geoff Porter for his contribution during his term throughout 2017/18.

“I want to especially recognise the efforts of three-time Mayor, Councillor Geoff Porter,” Cr Moore said.

“We sincerely thank him for his tireless efforts, advocacy and support of this community throughout the last year.

“It has been a great year under his leadership and the Hume community is grateful for his service.”
