New sports facility to offer more opportunities

The development of a new pavilion at Craigieburn’s Aston Recreation Reserve is officially underway.

Hume Mayor Geoff Porter said that the facility would be a fantastic addition to the rapidly expanding Aston Estate.

“With new residents consistently moving into the area, it is vital that they have access to high quality facilities within their neighbourhood,” Cr Porter said.

“The Craigieburn community has been asking for new spaces to hold events and meetings; the new pavilion will provide a wide range of opportunities to host new events and activities.”

“This new pavilion will also further motivate residents of all ages to get involved with sporting groups and activities, which are good for health and social inclusion.

Supporting the pavilion will be three soccer pitches, a cricket field (as part of two of the soccer pitches) and cricket practice facilities, lighting, play space, seating, shelter, BBQ, car parking and landscaping.

Land developer PEET has been a major partner in the development of this site to date, and they are contributing to the district level play space that is currently under construction.

“On behalf of Council, I would like to thank local Member for Yuroke Ros Spence MP and the Victorian Government who have provided $2 million towards the development of this pavilion as part of the Growing Suburbs Fund,” Cr Porter said.

“These vital funds have brought forward the development of the pavilion, which wasn’t planned to go ahead until 2020/2021.

“Aston Recreation Reserve will be home to the Craigieburn City Soccer Club, who has a large number of both male and female teams in senior and junior competitions.

“Giving local sporting clubs a place to call home allows them to create a family dynamic, something that we are proud of here in Hume City.”

In the 2017/2018 Hume City Council Community Satisfaction Survey one of the highest levels of satisfaction was provision and maintenance of sporting facilities and courts.

“It is our responsibility as a council to make sure our residents are provided with exceptional facilities, so they can not only thrive personally, but when playing in a team,” Cr Porter said.

“Aston Pavilion Sports Reserve is going to be a fantastic place for all the residents of Craigieburn and I am looking forward to seeing the benefits it will bring to our community throughout the years.”
