Woodlands Historic Homestead to open to the public

One of Hume’s most architecturally and historically magnificent buildings, Woodlands Historic Homestead will open its doors to the public, as part of Open House Melbourne, on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 July.

Hume Mayor, Councillor Geoff Porter said that visitors would have the opportunity to explore the grounds of Woodlands Historic Homestead and take in the local history and incredible design.

“Greenvale’s Woodlands Historic Homestead is one of the oldest built structures in Hume, with construction dating back to 1842,” Cr Porter said.

“It was a country house of excellence in the period, with the homestead and associated outbuildings still retaining many of their original features to this date.

“The Homestead is now home to the Living Legends – the International Home of Rest for Champion Racehorses.

“I encourage all attendees to explore the Homestead and its outbuildings and to check out special items of the homestead heritage collection and historical documents on display especially for the Open House Melbourne weekend.

Open House Melbourne has been running annually since 2008, with the aim of showcasing buildings of significance. This is done through a series of free, accessible, information and entertaining talks, tours, workshops and events.

Another event that will be happening at Living Legends is the arrival of the Melbourne Cup on 1 August 2018.

“Council is excited that the Cup will stop at Living Legends as one of the 37 destinations on the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour,” Cr Porter said.

“It is fantastic that Hume is being included amongst the impressive list of destinations including London, Seoul and Sydney.”

Councillor Porter said the inclusion of a Hume icon in the Open House Melbourne program and the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour was another reason that Hume is such a great place to live, work and visit.

“Hume residents should be proud of their City and the fantastic array of cafes, restaurants, wineries, museums, and galleries that are offered throughout the municipality,” Cr Porter said.

“These events at Woodlands Historic Homestead are the perfect opportunity to explore history and capture what makes Hume so great.”
