In Training to be Enviro Champs

Hume City Council is inviting the community to register for the Enviro Champions training program which begins on 17 February 2019.

Mayor of Hume City, Councillor Carly Moore said Enviro Champions are Hume residents who feel strongly about the environment and want to make a difference in our local community.

"This program is a chance for people to come together to support, protect and strengthen the environment and the community through the training and projects they choose to pursue.

“You do not necessarily need a specific project in mind to join, if you care about the environment and want to make like-minded friends, you are a potential Enviro Champ.”

Previous Enviro Champions projects have ranged from community gardens to creating a bee hotel and to teaching the community about the importance of native grasslands.

An Enviro Champions project based in Sunbury called “Straws Suck” asked the community and local cafes to ditch plastic straws in favour of environmentally-sustainable alternatives such as steel straws and straws made of rice and tapioca.

Beeswax-wraps maker and Enviro Champion Petra Chambers is a passionate environmentalist who believes that small changes create big results.

“We are all in charge of the choices we make and when many of us are making choices that benefit our environment, we see positive results,” Petra said.

The training will provide support to develop an idea and create a project plan. Participants can either work alone or as part of a team to collaborate on a shared project.

The Hume Enviro Champions program consists of 10 weeks of training with evaluation sessions held on Wednesday evenings from 6pm to 8:30pm. The program also includes day-time field trips and an evening graduation.
