Maximising the fun, reducing the waste

Hume City Council’s new Sustainable Events Guidelines are set to minimise the environmental footprint of community celebrations from small local events to major events and festivals.

Mayor of Hume City, Councillor Carly Moore said Council is trialing new guidelines that outline simple choices and changes that will help dramatically reduce waste and minimise the impact on the natural environment.

“It is amazing what can be achieved when we choose sustainable environmentally-friendly options, especially when small and simple changes are made consistently across all different types of community events in Hume,” Cr Moore said.

“For example, at the most recent Broadmeadows and Craigieburn festivals drinking stations were provided to enable patrons to use refillable water bottles, and over 1000 litres of water was consumed - the equivalent of almost 2000 single-use 600ml water bottles.

“We are building on that success, at future events, you will notice a further reduction in single-use plastics, replaced instead by greener options such as reusable or paper bags and bamboo cutlery.

“The new guidelines also expand Council’s promotion of recyclable products and sustainable practices, encouraging sustainable habits across our community that will protect our environment now and for future generations.

“Council gained feedback from event vendors to prepare the new guidelines, the majority were already making changes to be more environmentally friendly and recognised the need to be more sustainable.

“I am really pleased that these new guidelines will help the environment, while everyone comes together to have fun and be proud of where we live and who we are as a community.

The new Sustainable Events Guidelines will be trialed for 12 months and aim to:

  • minimise impact on the natural environment
  • reduce waste and use of natural resources
  • commitment to Reduce, Reuse & Recycle
  • encourage low environmental impact events and festivals; and
  • promote recyclable products and demonstrate sustainable practices

Our community will also can share their thoughts about our sustainability efforts during Hume’s event season by completing feedback surveys following each event.
