Prepare your property and be ready for summer

Hume residents are being reminded now is the time to act and prepare for the upcoming Fire Danger Period.

Mayor of Hume City, Councillor Carly Moore said with the Fire Danger Period commencing on Monday 9 December, it is imperative for residents to be aware and understand the fire risks in the area they live and to stay alert when travelling.

“Regardless of whether people live on the urban fringe or in a rural setting, it is vital to have a fire ready plan and be prepared,” Cr Moore said.

“To help clear homes of fire hazards, all eligible residents including renters, will receive a Free Fire Tip Pass valid at the Sunbury Landfill and Bolinda Road Resource Recovery Centre until 31 December.

“At this time of year Council officers commence annual fire hazard inspections of properties and issue notices to property owners regarding the maintenance of their land.

“These inspections are very important and are another way Council is working to help reduce fire risk. All Hume residents need to be mindful of fire risk and take responsibility for removing fire hazards and rubbish on their land.

“Residents would have noticed 12 new signs located across Hume City as an additional reminder to prepare properties before the Fire Danger Period commences this summer.”

“I encourage residents to download the VicEmergency app to their mobile device and to start checking Fire Danger Ratings daily, along with any warnings.

“By making sure you and your family know and understand the warning levels and what they mean, will help you to implement your fire plan in the event of an emergency,” Cr Moore said.

“Hume City Council is also working in partnership with the State Government and the fire service agencies to ensure that Hume City is fire ready.”
