Hume Central

Hume City Council wants to create new homes, jobs and facilities in Broadmeadows Town Centre. We have prepared a vision for Hume Central - the area around Council’s offices, the Library and Broadmeadows Town Hall.

Located in the heart of the Town Centre next to the Broadmeadows railway station and Broadmeadows shopping centre, Hume Central is an ideal location to live, work and gather. Hume Central: The Vision, adopted by Council in December 2014, can be downloaded here .

The Vision

The overall vision is to transform Hume Central into a vibrant and active urban centre for Broadmeadows where people will live, work, learn and participate in community life.

The diversity of uses will generate both day and night-time activity and see additional development on adjacent sites throughout the town centre.

Hume Central can provide a focus for the on-going development of Broadmeadows as a key regional hub for employment and services, as well as a destination for shopping, dining, and civic and cultural events. It should develop its own unique sense of place both through its physical form and structure but also through supporting the development of local businesses that showcase the cultural diversity of the local community, giving it a key point of difference with surrounding regional centres.

This development should showcase the potential of sustainable precincts to use resources more efficiently both in construction and on-going operation, helping to future-proof Hume Central against future regulations and the rising costs of energy and water.

Hume Central will be a place to live, work and socialise, with new apartment living, job opportunities, and more places to shop and meet.

A mix of high quality public spaces will provide places for meeting and socialising. New streets and footpaths will make it easy to walk, cycle and access the precinct.

A main street feel and commercial development sites will support business opportunities and deliver a vibrant street-life.

Spaces for culture, art, entertainment and learning will bring people together and contribute to strengthening the community.  The adaptive reuse of the Broadmeadows Town Hall could provide space for community use.

Hume Central will promote environmental sustainability for buildings and public spaces to minimise the impact on the environment.
