'Local jobs for local people' Booklet

The 'Local jobs for local people' handbook is designed to provide local government leaders with the practical knowledge needed to implement the Hume program model in their own communities.

The publication is relevant to federal and state government decision-makers, employers, employment and service providers, vocational training organisations and other organisations working to address unemployment and improve social cohesion.

Hume Jobs and Skills Taskforce

In April 2012, Council adopted the establishment of the Hume Jobs and Skills Taskforce (HJSTF), to provide strategic stewardship for planning whole of government and community support to improve employment opportunities for Hume residents and supporting businesses in Hume with the provision of an effective labour supply

Membership includes representation from the two Employment and Learning Committees, all tiers of government, industry, community, secondary and higher education providers..

Hume Employment and Learning Committee

Is a  formal committee in Hume bringing together employment and learning providers to support the the Hume community is to maximise employment and learning opportunities for Hume residents.  The Hume ELC is represented by jobactive providers, Disability Employment Services (DES) providers, Jobs Victoria Employment Network providers, Services Australia, Hume City Council, Hume Whittlesea Local Learning and Employment Network and Local Training providers.

Hume Community Revitalisation Projects

Jobs Victoria's $10.8 million Community Revitalisation Program offers local communities across metropolitan and regional Victoria support to develop new pathways to employment for people facing entrenched barriers to meaningful, ongoing work. Community Revitalisation is a placed-based approach that involves the community as active participants in co-defining issues and co-designing and delivering solutions. Community Revitalisation is currently running in Broadmeadows, Campbellfield and Meadow Heights in Melbourne's North.    

The following Community Revitalisation initiatives are currently underway in Melbourne's North;

Employment Readiness and Careers Counselling 
This is an intensive person-centered approach using the Employment Readiness Scale, targeted career development strategies and professional careers guidance to assess levels of work readiness and employability.

Passport  to Work  
Passport to Work aims to increase the level of productivity and emotional resilience of local jokseekers over a three to four month period so that they are ready to move into meaningful, ongoing work. The program is delivering a tailored program to 80 jobseekers selected by Council's Local Jobs for Local People team.

Imagineering  
The Imagineering program is delivered through local schools and engages parents, students and their families with the possibilities of meaningful, ongoing work. Imagineering encourages an entrepreneurship style curriculum for all primary school aged children to help teach creative thinking and start developing resilience while building business skills.  

Stepping Stones to Economic Inclusion
A staged program of activities to develop small business and self employment capabilities for up to 30 recently arrived migrant and refugee women. This program specifically targets the barriers experienced by the growing number of humanitarian settlers in Hume, particularly women with family caring responsibilities. The program is tailored to recently arrived migrant and refugee women and aims to build on each participants strengths and experiences. The program offers a suite of culturally tailored workshops, mentoring and holistic support to develop participants business capability and improve their financial security and social connectedness.
