Wet weather: changes to outdoor event bookings and mowing

Spring is here – and so is the rain!

Due to the conditions on-ground at many of our parks and reserves, we're unable to take new bookings for events in grassed areas in October.

This has been caused by higher-than-average rainfall, and will likely be further affected by the declared La Niña too.

We offer a range of other venues and outdoor venues that can be hired for events, including:

An update on mowing operations

We’re getting on with the task of cutting more than 20,000,000 square meters of grass in 700+ parks, walkways and reserves across Hume City.

As usual, the grass will grow faster during spring time.

To address this, we've added five additional mowing crews to work across Hume City for three months, making a total 25 mowing crews.

We aim to mow 95% of our sites on a four-week cycle, but rain can affect this schedule if the grounds are too wet to get machinery onsite.

Where we can't access a site, we’ll continue to undertake maintenance such as brush cutting, litter pickup, mulching works and topdressing.

If a site hasn't been mowed due to wet weather, we will check every few days to check if the site is dry enough to be mowed.

With more sunlight and warmer days approaching, we hope to get back to our normal mowing operations soon.

We’re also embarking on a weed-spraying program across our destination parks, facilities and high-traffic parks such as Craigieburn ANZAC Park, Golden Sun Moth Reserve in Craigieburn, Jack Roper Reserve in Broadmeadows and Galaxyland in Sunbury and more.

Did you know that many of the sites we mow across Hume City have heavy, clay-based soils? This type of soil typically holds water longer, and doesn’t drain as easily as other soils.
