Playgroups are usually free and are located throughout the Hume area.

Playgroup is fun and important too

Playgroups are for babies, toddlers and preschool children and their parents or carers.  Fathers, mothers, grandparents, carers, families with additional needs and families from other cultures are all welcome at playgroups.

Why Join a Playgroup?

Playgroups provide a supportive environment for children and their family or carer. There is a sense of belonging to the community, opportunities to form friendships and share ideas and information.

Playgroups offer children:

  • a place to play and socialize with other children
  • opportunities to create, invent, reason and problem solve
  • safe and stimulating environment to play in and explore

Playgroups offer adults:

  • a time to play with their children and encourage learning through play
  • an opportunity to meet local families and develop social support networks
  • access to parenting information, resources and support services
  • a sense of community involvement and belonging

Supported playgroups are play spaces where children and families come together to learn and play.  Children are able to mix with other children and participate in play-based learning experiences.  Parents have the opportunity to meet other parents, develop friendships, and share parenting experiences.

Supported playgroups are facilitated by a qualified Early Years Educator.  The facilitator will support the group and may offer the parent tips and ideas about things that they can be doing at home to extend their children’s learning and development. The playgroup facilitator can also provide information about other support services and work alongside parents in accessing these services.

Hume City Council Supported Playgroups are FREE for families living in the municipality

A referral is necessary to join a supported playgroup. A Maternal and Child Health nurse or a family support and counselling worker may refer you to a supported playgroup.

Community Playgroups are parent-led and driven by the community. They provide an opportunity for parents, grandparents and carers to connect through common interests while their children play.

Playgroups are fantastic because they give children the chance to connect with others and develop their skills, while providing a great way for parents or carers to make friends and talk to others in similar situations to themselves.

If you are interested in adding another playgroup to the list, why not start your own? All you need is a couple of friends and a place to meet.

Our Playgroup Support Officers would love to work with you on starting your own playgroup, contact them at playgroups@hume.vic.gov.au.

New playgroups are created for various reasons such as:

  • there being no playgroups in the area
  • playgroups in the area are full
  • there are no playgroups held on certain days

New playgroups can also be started for families with specific interests such as young parents, fathers, school-based and multicultural.

Experienced Maternal and Child Health Nurses are available to visit playgroups, child care centres and preschools to monitor the health and development of children.

The nurses can also address parent groups on topics of interest and concern.
