Upon completion of Broadmeadows Revitalisation Wayfinding Project, Hume City Council conducted online and in person surveys with 51 community members who shared their feedback about the project.
Key Findings:
- Almost two-thirds of respondents (65%) indicated that they had seen the wayfinding decals before being shown them in the survey (n=33), of whom 42% said they had used them to find their way around, mostly to go to Broadmeadows Global Learning Centre (Library) (46%), Broadmeadows train station (31%), Broadmeadows Central Shopping Centre (31%), Kangan TAFE (31%), and Youth Central (31%).
- The pictures on the street raised awareness of Youth Central for a quarter (26%) of those who were aware of the service (n=34).
- Of the 10 locations included in the youth artwork and wayfinding decals, a quarter of those surveyed (25%) said that the pictures on the street had helped the find one or more of the services.
- Pictures on the street were more effective at helping people find customer service (27%) and the library (24%).
- 84% of those surveyed said they had seen the youth artwork.
- The most common message recall was stay positive / mental health will improve (58%).
- The key strengths of the messaging are making people feel safer (43%) and connected to the community (47%).
- 35% said they were very relevant and 26% said they were very useful.
- Among the 23% who rated them as not useful, the main reasons were:
- because they had never really looked at them closely (46%);
- they thought they were targeted towards a different age group (38%, mentioned by 14-17-year-olds as well as 25+-year-olds); and/or
- they already knew how to find the places in the images (38%).
- The aspects the most people liked were positive messages, artwork and how colourful they were.
- Five respondents mentioned dislikes, but there was no stand-out issue stated.
Community members shared what they liked most about the youth artwork and the wayfinding decals:
“I really like the inspiring messages and the colours really catch your eye too.”
“I like how they're in a place that a lot of students are, and those actual students got to make these images.”
“I like how they are so positive and help people who are new to the area find their way.”
“They make me feel like someone cares and I can get help or support if I need it.”
“It makes me proud that someone cares enough to do this and to want us all to be better and get help or find belonging.”
“Positive messages are refreshing to see since recent impacts of the pandemic.”
