The Hume Young Leaders Awards program aims to recognise and celebrate the contribution and leadership young people aged 12 to 24 make in their communities. 

Young Leaders Awards 2024

The Young Leaders Awards categories for 2024 are:

Young Advocacy Leader - Young person who strongly advocates for change on a particular issue and champions the lives of others.

Young Environmental Leader - Young person who demonstrates commitment to protecting the environment, advocates for sustainability and champions others to take action.  

Young Gender Equity Leader - Young person who has shown commitment to advocating for gender equity and freedom from violence against women and gender diverse people. 

Young Creative Leader - Young person who uses their art to support others, being a leader to help teach people in a creative sense or uses their voice to shine a light on issues in their communities. This can be art, dance, song, film or other forms of artistic expression. 

Young Entrepreneurial Leader - Young person leading the way in developing innovative social and/or business solutions for the community.

Young Sports Leader - Young person who inspires others to participate in sport and/or has had a positive impact in sport by leading, coaching or participating.

Young Aboriginal Leader - A young person who identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander who advocates for the lives of people in their communities and/or promotes Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander issues in the wider community.

Young Group of the Year - A group of young people that are supporting, advocating, and making a difference to the community. The Young Group of the Year may be active in one or more of the above category areas.

Please note that young people can only be nominated for one award.

Young Leader of the Year Award

This award will be presented to a young person who demonstrates various leadership attributes and is leading change in Hume.

Young people cannot nominate themselves for this award. The award winner will be chosen by the Assessment Panel from the above categories.

Eligibility

To be eligible for Young Leaders Awards, nominated individuals must:

  • Be aged 12 – 24
  • Live, work, study and/or volunteer in Hume

Assessment Criteria

How have you/the nominee demonstrated leadership in the selected award category?

  • What have been your key role/responsibilities in your/the nominees award area?
  • What community activities, projects, or ideas have you/the nominee been engaged in that benefits the community in the award area?
  • What have been your/their contribution to the lives of other young people and/or community members?

 

How has your leadership in this area had a positive impact on the community?

  • What have been the outcomes of your/the nominees activities/projects?
  • How have you/this young person made a positive impact in the lives of other young people and/or community?

 

What are the personal leadership attributes that the young person and/or groups have shown in the selected award category?

  • What skills or values do you/the individual or group demonstrate?
  • What other personal attributes would you like to add to support this nomination?

Award Prize

Award winners will be presented with a $500 cheque and a certificate to recognise their leadership achievement.

The category finalists will receive a certificate to recognise their leadership in their community.

The Award winners and category finalists will be offered the opportunity to attend a leadership workshop. This workshop will have a positive impact on young people’s education and employment pathways and continue to develop their leadership journey.

Terms and Conditions

  • Nominees must live, work, study and/or volunteer in Hume.
  • Nominees must be between the ages of 12 –24 years.
  • All nominations must have details included regarding what award they have been nominated for and why they have been nominated.
  • Individuals can only be nominated for one category.
  • Groups can only be nominated for Young Group of the Year category.
  • Individuals who are on the assessment panel cannot act as referees.
  • Submissions must be received by Wednesday 5 July 2023.
  • No late submissions will be accepted.
  • A panel appointed by Hume City Council will receive and judge all nominations. The assessment panel’s decision is final.
  • Hume Youth Services will inform the Award category finalists that they have been selected as a category finalist and the winner will be announced at the Young Leaders Awards Ceremony which will be held at Hume Town Hall Broadmeadows.
  • Winners of the Young Leaders Awards 2022 cannot be nominated for Young Leaders Awards 2023; however, can be re-nominated for Young Leaders Awards 2024.
  • The Young Leaders Award winners and category finalists must agree to have their photo used in Hume City Council’s print and digital communications.

Young Creative Leader

Alyssa Barbara

Alyssia has performed dance all around Melbourne at big events such as Moomba and Royal Melbourne Show to smaller local events such as Pass the Mic Tours. Alysa demonstrates enthusiasm and a can-do attitude always bringing a positive attitude and mindset to supporting other dancers to grow their skills and increase their confidence.

Young Environmental Leader

Louis Harrison

Winner - Louis H 05.jpg

Louis was appointed the Environmental Sustainability Leader in 2020 and 2022 for their school Environmental group. Louis has also advocated for more recycling bins at school, supported tree planting sessions, clean up Australia day events and the introduction of compost bins among many other achievements in raising awareness around environmental issues.

Young Community Change Maker

St John’s Ambulance Volunteers Sunbury Unit

These dedicated volunteers are committed to improve their skills and knowledge and volunteer their time to support local community events to be safe and welcoming for the entire community.

Young Advocacy Leader

Kara Gifford

Winner - Kara G 09 .jpg

Kara is passionate about increasing the knowledge of every Australian to understand the impacts that having an allergy and/or anaphylaxis can have on a person, and volunteer with the National Allergy Strategy as part of the 250k allergy project.

Young Gender Equity Leader

Good People Act Now (GPAN) from Banksia Gardens Community Services

GPAN are passionate and dedicated in promoting gender equity and the prevention of violence against women. They volunteer their time to meet to develop plans and facilitate workshops for young people in Melbourne and are involved in fundraising efforts to continue their important work.

Finalist: Bushra Hashi

Young Sports Leader – Joint Winners

Carly Cranston

Winner - Carley 03.jpg

Carly was the co-captain for the Youth League team and was selected as player of the Month for the competition three times. Carly also coaches an Under 10 boys team and is a role model to other young women at the club.

Paul Bugeja

Winner - Paul 02.jpg

Paul has been part of the Craigieburn Basketball Association for 16 years, coaching junior teams and advocating for better access to basketball competitions in growing communities within Hume. Paul has helped the Craigieburn Basketball Association grow their presence in the Hume growth corridor.

Young Social Entrepreneur Leader

Shato Hamasaid

Shato uses their art to express themselves and share their message and story. Their art has been showcased at many events and was selected to be shown at Hume City Council Refugee week. Shato uses their art to advocate and raise money for animal cruelty.
