We all have a responsibility to help protect our women and girls.

16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off today Friday 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until Saturday 10 December, Human Rights Day.

Many people are surprised to learn how prevalent family violence is in our communities.

  • 1 in 3 Australian women have experienced physical violence.
  • 90 per cent of Australian women with an intellectual disability have experienced sexual abuse
  • 1 in 4 women, and 1 in 7 men, have experienced emotional abuse by a current or former partner.

Over the next 16 days we will be running a variety of workshops, events and activations to help educate our community.

We aim to build a culture of respect for all, regardless of an individual’s gender, age, sexuality or cultural background. These events include:

  • Walks Against Violence with groups meeting at our community and learning centres at Aitken Hill, Broadmeadows, Greenvale, Homestead, Kalkallo, Mickleham North and Newbury.

  • Addressing Family Violence in our Diverse Community panel Discussion at Broadmeadows Library. This event will assist migrant and refugee women, community agencies, and the broader Hume Community to learn, explore and generate ideas for preventing and responding to family violence.

  • Health and Wellbeing workshops to help women find an opportunity to consider their wellbeing needs and the importance of valuing themselves.

  • Let’s Talk Money and Housing workshops to assist women who are experiencing homelessness or family violence

  • Change Starts With You youth focused event that will launch a new resource created with young people, for young people to help prevent violence against women.
