The best way to protect yourself and your loved ones against influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated every flu season.

The flu isn’t like the common cold. It can have serious and devastating outcomes. Each year the flu affects thousands of Victorians and puts an enormous amount of pressure on hospitals and health system. Over 3,500 avoidable deaths occur in Australia every year from complications of seasonal flu, including pneumonia.

The flu can be particularly severe in people with existing medical conditions, older people and young children. Flu vaccination is an important preventive measure for these groups. While some people who get vaccinated still get sick, flu vaccination has been shown in several studies to reduce severity of illness.

The Department of Health and Human Services recommends everyone six months and older get an annual flu vaccine.

Hume City Council provides free flu vaccines to each of the below cohorts:

  • all children aged six months to less than five years
  • all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged from six months
  • all adults aged 65 years and over
  • all people aged from six months with medical conditions predisposing them to severe influenza; for example, severe asthma, lung or heart disease, low immunity or diabetes
  • pregnant women (during any stage of pregnancy)

We can also provide influenza vaccines to people not listed above for $22. EFTPOS facilities are available at all public sessions.
