They Cannot Take The Sky - Stories From Detention, by Behind the Wire (Gee Lee-Wik Doleen Gallery - Craigieburn)

They Cannot Take the Sky - Stories from Detention is an award-winning oral history / film project by Behind the Wire, documenting stories from immigration detention.

In this exhibition you will hear first-hand from people who have sought asylum in Australia and were / are detained by the Australian Government under its mandatory detention policy.

This poignant exhibition offers access to voices that are rarely heard. The people you will meet in this exhibition are diverse and individual; their experiences are unique and often surprising.

Each person speaks only for themselves, their own memories and their own hopes for the future.

Originally developed through the Immigration Museum, Melbourne in 2017, Gee Lee-Wik Doleen Gallery is hosting this exhibition to mark Refugee Week 2018 in Hume. This exhibition will have a strong interactive component – encouraging visitors to tell their own stories and responses.

The exhibition is directed by a committee of narrators and other people with lived experience of immigration detention. It was awarded the Contribution to Multiculturalism by a Community Organisation Award at the 2017 Melbourne Awards..

Behind the Wire was also granted the 2016 Oral History Victoria Community Innovation Award and The Messenger podcast won the Grand Award at the 2017 New York Festivals International Radio Awards and Best Radio – Documentary at the UNAA Media Awards.
