Gee Lee-Wik Doleen - Gallery Naming

Craigieburn Gallery naming and exhibition.

In early 2013, Hume City Council invited the community to assist in finding a formal name for the Craigieburn Gallery. The naming process represented an opportunity to reflect and promote the artistic, cultural and heritage values which contribute to the local identity of Craigieburn, and in turn promote a memorable identity for the Gallery. Eleven well-considered submissions were received, reflecting a diverse range of ideas from local residents, community groups and representative organisations.

In October 2013, the Council considered all names put forward and adopted a Woiwurrung name nominated by Aboriginal Elders, “Gee Lee-Wik Doleen” meaning “The Ancestors Pride”. Further to its rich meaning in Aboriginal culture, the name successfully encapsulated a theme present in many of the names nominated: the desire to recognise the contribution of Craigieburn’s forebears. The phrase affords respect to the many people who have contributed to the rich cultural heritage of the area and the legacy upon which the Gallery and its program have been built.

A formal naming ceremony and accompanying exhibition celebrating the name Gee Lee-Wik Doleen Gallery will be undertaken in conjunction with NAIDOC Week 7-14 July, with the exhibition continuing through August.

The exhibition will engage an innovative format, with the Gallery inviting local artists, writers, community groups and schools groups to interpret the phrase “The Ancestors Pride” and draw or write directly onto the Gallery walls, contributing to a community interpretation of the new name. An exhibition opening event and naming ceremony including a traditional Welcome to Country will be undertaken 2pm, Sunday 6th July. Further to this, a series of artist talks as well as  presentations about Aboriginal culture are planned to accompany the exhibition.
