Sunbury Cultural Commissions

Sunbury Cultural Commissions features new works by 10 Hume artists, inspired by a range of photographs and objects in the George Evans Collection.

These works were created in collaboration with Contemporary Art and Social Transformation (CAST) at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). The Sunbury Cultural Commissions project began as a series of ‘creative laboratories’ earlier this year, providing artists with mentoring to explore ideas for creating large scale public artworks.

The selection on display here is the culmination of this experiment - realised in painting, drawing, textile design, sculpture, the written word, dance and installation with light and sound. Each artwork is inspired by a particular photograph, object, or story in the historic GEM Collection. The artists’ intentions are ornamental, playful, educational, philosophical, poignant and political.

These works will become part of the Hume Civic Collection when the exhibition closes in February 2020.
