Hume City Public Lighting Policy

On 10 September 2018, Council passed a resolution to make the Draft Hume City Public Lighting Policy available for public consultation.

The Draft Hume City Public Lighting Policy seeks to provide public lighting to meet the needs of the community using the most energy efficient lighting available to the appropriate standards for the safe movement of vehicle and pedestrian traffic at night.

The Draft Policy would provide a consistent approach to customers’ requests for additional and modified street light lighting. It provides guidelines on public lighting for public open spaces, public activity areas, car parks and rural areas.

Council has considered and addressed a number of key considerations in drafting the Policy including:

  • The issue of non-standard street lights (decorative lights)
  • The additional cost of non-standard street lights when compared to standard lights.
  • The replacement of damaged or end of life non-standard lighting and the financial implications of this.
  • Proposing that new and damaged or end of life light poles and luminaires are replaced with standard lighting.

Submissions and feedback on the Draft Hume City Public Lighting Policy are invited until close of business on Thursday 18 October 2018.
