Employment Pathways

We have a wide range of on-the-job learning opportunities to help provide students with an employment pathway. 

Placements provide the students with an opportunity to observe, learn and gain exposure in a supportive work environment while developing employability skills and exploring possible career options.

All eligible students are welcome, and we encourage the following groups to apply:

  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people
  • people from a culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
  • people with a disability or impairment
  • LGBTIQA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender/gender diverse, intersex, queer, asexual).

Who can apply

We provide a wide range of services that meet the needs of the community. For more information about our services, and discover areas that may be of interest to you, refer to the 'Our Organisation' section in our Council Plan.

Please note we do not offer placements within community services - contact the Department of Health and Human Services for placements in this field.

Student Requirements

  • Submit an expression of interest at least 20 business days before the desired commencement date.
  • Prior to commencing the placement, students must provide a signed Student Placement Agreement and be covered for insurance by your educational institute.
  • Students are to act in accordance with our Employee Code of Conduct at all times.
  • We do not offer work experience for secondary students during the school holiday period.

Secondary Students

Year 10 students can apply for up to five days of work experience placement during school term and will receive a payment of $5 per day under the Education Victoria Work Experience Arrangements. Students will be placed with a supervisor and can complete tasks in an area of their interest. To be eligible, students must be: 

  • Year 10 or above
  • At least 15 years of age at time of placement
  • Preference will be given to a current resident or student studying in Hume City. 

Tertiary Students

Tertiary Placements provide eligible students completing a current tertiary course with practical experience relevant to their field of study. Supervised placement can be project or time based to meet the requirements as set out by the educational institution. The placement will be unpaid. To be eligible, students must be:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Be enrolled at a registered educational institution.
  • Able to provide evidence of a current Working with Children Check, where required.
  • Preference will be given to a current resident or student studying in Hume City.

Next Steps

Once you submit your expression of interest form:

  • You will receive an acknowledge of the request and we will explore available opportunities.
  • We will advise you within 10 business days via email if a placement can be arranged and if so, will provide placement details including the work location, hours of work, dress requirements and the name of the staff member to whom the student should report to.
  • We recommended looking for placement elsewhere if you do not hear back from us within this timeframe.
  • You will be asked to complete and return a Student Placement Arrangement Form before placement can commence.
  • We recommended looking for placement elsewhere if you do not hear back from us within 10 business days.
