Work Experience

Hume City Council recognises the importance placed on work experience by educational institutions and students. As a large and diverse organisation, Council is committed to providing the necessary resources to support a placement and a wide range of work experience options for as many students (secondary and further education) as practicable.

Ultimately, the number and timing of work experience students accepted into Council depends on Council's ability to provide effective on the job experience. Students will be given meaningful and challenging projects in a supportive work environment.

If Council receives more work experience requests than can be placed, preference will be given to those schools, institutions etc within the Hume municipality and to students residing within the area. All work experience placements are coordinated through the Human Resources Department.

Cut off dates for all Work Experience Requests

  • For work placements between January - July 2020: requests must be received by Friday 27 March 2020
  • For work placements between August - December 2020: requests must be received by Friday 28 August 2020

Requests will not be accepted after these dates.

Request for Work Experience should be made in writing to:

Work Experience Coordinator
Human Resources Department
Hume City Council
PO Box 119

or via email to

Council can only tentatively book a work experience placement until a completed Work Experience Arrangements Form signed by all parties is received. Applications take approximately 10 working days to process.

All requests for work experience should be made in writing and should include the following information:

  • your full name, address and contact telephone numbers;
  • the type of work experience you are seeking (please be specific as the more detail you provide, the easier it will be for us to find the right placement for you);
  • start and finish dates for the proposed or requested work experience period. We appreciate as much notice as possible to allow adequate time to consider your request (at least six weeks prior to the requested date);
  • the name and contact information of your educational institution.

You will not be able to commence a work experience placement if a completed Work Experience Arrangement Form has not been received by Council. This will be requested once a work placement has been confirmed.

Hume City Council will acknowledge the request and will subsequently advise if a placement/s can be arranged and if so will provide placement details including the name of the staff member to whom the student should report.

Generally, further education students do not receive any payment for work experience. Secondary students receive a minimum payment of $5 per day under the Education Victoria Work Experience Arrangements. Students will receive their money via cheque payment after their timesheet has been processed.

Work Experience students are required to start work at 9:00am and finish at 4:30pm, unless otherwise specified by the relevant manager or team leader. Students will report to a either a coordinator or supervisor within the work unit in which their placement will be. The coordinator or supervisor will provide the student with assistance, mentoring and coaching during the work placement.

Business attire is required at Hume City Council where the student is completing their placement within an office environment. It is suggested that students speak to their coordinator or supervisor before the commencement date as there may be specific requirements for their work area.

Where Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required for the role that the student is undertaking, this equipment will be provided by Council. However, students will need to supply their own steel capped boots where required.
