Waste Service Charge

Your rates notice lists the waste service charges that apply to your property.

There are two waste service charges: the kerbside waste charge and the public waste charge.

Kerbside waste charge

The kerbside waste charge covers the cost of providing kerbside bin collections to your property.

All residential ratepayers pay the kerbside waste fee, along with businesses that choose to use our kerbside bin service.

The annual kerbside waste charge for 2024/25 is a flat fee of $401.63.

For residential properties, the kerbside waste charge covers:

  • Supply and maintenance of your household bins
  • Weekly/fortnightly bin collections
  • Maintenance of collection trucks
  • Recycling and organic material processing fees
  • Landfill disposal fees.

The kerbside waste charge covers standard size bins only. Additional or larger bins incur additional fees.

The kerbside waste charge also covers your annual waste vouchers and other hard waste services. These include:

  • Hard waste collections
  • Bundled branch collections
  • Access to Resource Recovery Centre
  • Hume Clean Days
  • Mulching days.

Visit the Waste section for more information.

Public waste charge

The public waste charge covers the cost of keeping our public spaces clean. All ratepayers (residential and non-residential) pay the public waste charge.

For residents, the annual public waste charge for 2024/25 is a flat fee of $222.99, or $172.99 for pensioners. For businesses, the public waste charge is calculated based on the property’s Capital Improved Value (CIV).

The public waste charge covers:

  • Providing and maintaining public litter bins
  • Regular street sweeping on footpaths and roads
  • Cleaning up litter from roadsides and reserves
  • Collecting and disposing of illegally dumped rubbish.

How is the waste service charge determined each year?

The kerbside and public waste service charges are decided each year as part of the Council budget and reflect the cost of providing waste services to the Hume community. Waste service charges are not subject to the rate cap.
