Safe travels as Hume shines bright with Christmas light displays

Hume City Council is reminding residents and visitors to make safety their highest priority when enjoying festive lighting displays across Hume neighbourhoods in the lead up to Christmas.
Mayor of Hume City, Councillor Carly Moore said drivers and pedestrians need to be courteous, considerate of others and extra careful when looking at local Christmas light displays and travelling between them.
“Exploring local Christmas light displays can be a magical and joyful experience and for many Hume families, it’s an annual tradition,” Cr Moore said.
“As you drive or walk in and around local streets this festive season, it is really important to pay attention and be safe at all times.
“By doing a few practical things, you can help to keep you, your family and others safe and happy this Christmas.
“This includes obeying the road rules, holding children’s hands, not rushing and being mindful of people and property.”
Safety reminders for walking to and from Christmas light displays:
- Wear your walking shoes and light-coloured clothing so you are more visible to traffic
- Enjoy the display with family or friends
- Always supervise children
- Be courteous and considerate of private property and neighbouring homes
Safety reminders for driving to and from Christmas light displays:
- Choose a responsible, designated driver to stay alert and focussed on the road
- Be extra mindful of pedestrians
- Be patient and drive slowly
- If parking vehicles, park safely and legally, without blocking footpaths, driveways or roads
Councillor Moore also asked Hume residents who have Christmas displays that attract high volumes of visitors to get in touch with Council’s Traffic Management Team, to discuss any concerns with traffic and pedestrian management.
“Council knows that many residents spend weeks, months and sometimes years creating their magnificent, awe-inspiring displays and we want everyone to enjoy them safely,” Cr Moore said.
“Our officers are on hand to help ensure any traffic around your home is managed as safely as possible.
“Simply give Council’s Customer Service Team a ring or pop into our Customer Service offices in Broadmeadows, Sunbury or Craigieburn during business hours for assistance.”
