Hume is home to major industry clusters that offer investment, innovation and employment.
Manufacturing
Hume City has traditionally been a strong manufacturing hub and is the largest employer, generating 23,915 jobs in 2018/2019.
Hume had a particularly strong automotive manufacturing industry led by Ford Motor Company along with associated automotive component manufacturers. The closure of Ford in 2015 signalled a new era where leaner, more advanced manufacturers servicing niche and specialist markets are now emerging.
Transport, Postal and Warehousing
The transport and logistics sector is the second largest industry sector in Hume City, employing over 20 per cent of Hume City's labour force.
The sector is showing considerable growth locally with over 5,000 additional jobs created over the last ten years and huge growth expected as more large companies make the choice to locate and expand in Hume City to take advantage of the world class logistics assets on offer.
Construction
Hume has traditionally had a strong construction base and with continued housing development growth, particularly in the Mickleham, Kalkallo and Sunbury urban growth areas, this is expected to remain strong. Over 15,676 people are employed in the construction industry.
Food Manufacturing
The Food and Beverages manufacturing sector is showing signs of explosive growth with more investment expected to follow.
Melbourne’s North Food Group provides industry support for food manufacturers in the five northern council areas, with a strong focus on support to enter export markets.
Melbourne’s North is home to a major Food and Beverage manufacturing cluster with over 400 manufacturers.
Visitor Economy (Tourism)
The visitor economy (or tourism) is Hume City’s fourth largest economic driver and continues to show growth in both employment and output, contributing to Hume’s economic prosperity. This highlights the important role Council plays in supporting local tourism, facilitating new investment in tourism and enhancing the liveability of the area.
Hume’s competitive advantages for the visitor economy include its close proximity to Melbourne Airport and the Melbourne CBD, as well as its position as a regional and metropolitan destination attracting overnight stays and day trips.
