Neighbourhood Laws

Your actions on your property or within your community can have an impact on your neighbours and fellow residents, and vice versa. That’s part of living in a community. The best way to prevent disputes is to communicate respectfully with each other. Our Local Laws are designed to help improve our neighbourhoods and create a safe environment for all.

Common issues include unsightly properties, the keeping of animals and burning in the open air. If you are having an issue with a neighbour  and require advice to solve it the Legal Aid Victoria Website has some helpful articles.

Local Laws may also require you to obtain a permit such as skip bins, shipping containers and heavy and long vehicles on private property.

If you are unsure if you require a permit or have any questions contact our City Laws team by emailing contactus@hume.vic.gov.au or calling Councils Customer Service team on 03 9205 2200.
