The oration honours the life and legacy of Gary Jungwirth, a passionate advocate for human rights, social justice, community development, and support for refugees and emerging communities. Throughout his life, Gary worked tirelessly to build stronger, more inclusive communities and champion opportunities for those facing disadvantage.
We are delighted that Abdi Aden will be our MC for the event, hosting inspiring guest speakers including Mariam Issa, who will share their experiences, perspectives and stories of resilience, leadership and belonging.
Our panel discussion will explore what it means to put Social Justice into Action for individuals and communities. Our guest panellists include:
- Kylie Spencer who is a proud Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung woman who calls Hume home and is a member of the Hume City Council's Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group.
- Anastasia Rose Le who is a strategic advocate, systems thinker, and cultural reform leader, a trans woman of Vietnamese heritage with lived experience of forced displacement and a founding member of the Hume LGBTQIA+ Community Working Group.
- Jaime de Loma-Osorio Ricon who is Deputy CEO of Banksia Gardens Community Services and is heavily involved in Human Rights Education initiatives.
- Dr. Mario Peucker who is an Associate Professor at the Institute for Sustainable Industries and Liveable Cities at Victoria University and his more recent work has focused especially on place-based, community-centered anti-racism.
Guests will also enjoy vibrant cultural performances by The Dili All Stars and Super Mande Percussion celebrating the diversity and richness of our community.
