Winter Home Safety

While emergencies can occur at any time of the year, the Victorian autumn and winter is an important period to keep yourself safe at home.

Smoke Alarms

Only working smoke alarms save lives. Without a working smoke alarm, a fire is more likely to damage or destroy your property. It is also more likely to cause serious injury or death.

Only a working smoke alarm will wake you if there’s smoke. Be sure to follow these top safety tips today:

  • Test your smoke alarm monthly

  • Dust or gently vacuum around your smoke alarm

  • Change battery annually

  • Replace battery every 10 years

  • Replace the entire smoke alarm if it still beeps after installing a new battery

Carbon Monoxide

  • Check if a safety alert has been issued for your gas heater

  • Don’t leave your gas heater on overnight, or for extensive periods

  • Install a carbon monoxide alarm as a back-up measure

  • If your heater is very old, consider replacing it

  • Never bring portable outdoor gas appliances indoors.
